Why did Mr and Mrs Ramsay decide to upgrade their windows and door?

The original aluminium windows, approximately 26 years old, were no longer performing effectively. Draughts were increasingly noticeable, and frequent internal condensation was affecting comfort within the home.

Beyond performance issues, the existing window style, reversible units positioned above fixed panes, no longer suited the Ramsays’ needs. Improving insulation, updating the design and enhancing overall usability became the driving factors behind the upgrade.

At the same time, the existing white uPVC front door felt dated and lacked the structural presence and security Mr and Mrs Ramsay wanted for the front of their property.

How has the new window design improved ventilation and functionality?

One of the most practical improvements came from the window configuration. The original design required opening one of the main sashes for ventilation, and during the winter months, it cooled the house down too quickly. The new design introduced Lorimer side-hinged casement windows with top-hoppers. The opening top-hoppers allow controlled airflow with the option to open the larger side-hinged casement windows.

This subtle design change has significantly improved everyday functionality. The top hoppers provide efficient ventilation while maintaining security and comfort, which is particularly useful in changing Scottish weather conditions. By separating ventilation from the main opening sashes, the home now benefits from greater flexibility and ease of use.

How has thermal performance improved?

Compared to the 26-year-old aluminium frames, the new Lorimer casement windows from CR Smith, which achieve a U-value of 1.4W/m2k, significantly reduce heat loss and internal condensation during colder months, helping maintain a stable indoor temperature all year round.

How have slim frames modernised the home?

A defining feature of the upgrade is the slim-frame design of Lorimer windows. Thanks to ingenious engineering, Lorimer windows have been designed to increase the glazed area without compromising on strength.

Compared to the previous aluminium windows, the refined frame profile allows for more light to flood the home, making each room feel brighter and more inviting. They also give the facade of the property a cleaner, more contemporary appearance.

The streamlined proportions create a subtle yet impactful modernisation of the property, both internally and externally. Rooms feel spacious and airy, while the exterior benefits from sharper, more defined window lines.

How has the new front door enhanced security and kerb appeal?

To complete the transformation, the Ramsays replaced their white uPVC front door, which had a dated design and poor energy efficiency, with a TimberLuxe Eiger engineered timber door from the Classic collection in anthracite grey. The TimberLuxe door features a Secured by Design three-star cylinder and Thunderbolt five-point locking system, while the Lorimer windows meet PAS24 security standards.

This upgrade creates a bold entrance to the front of the home. The engineered timber construction offers enhanced structural strength and advanced locking systems, significantly improving security.

The anthracite grey finish adds depth and character to the front of the property, bringing a contemporary look. The new windows and doors have instantly enhanced the property’s kerb appeal, bringing a fresh, new finish to the facade.

What is the overall impact of the transformation?

The Ramsays’ home in St Andrews now benefits from improved warmth, enhanced ventilation and a distinctly modern aesthetic.

By upgrading to A-rated Lorimer casement windows, achieving a U-value of 1.4W/m2k and installing a Secured by Design TimberLuxe Eiger door, this St Andrews home now benefits from improved thermal performance, enhanced ventilation and PAS24-accredited security.

The transformation demonstrates how thoughtful design and modern engineering can elevate both comfort and kerb appeal in Scottish homes.

Before and after. Before, the rosewood stain made the space feel dark and small, and the window configuration reduced ventilation options.

After, the white, slim frames allow more light to fill the space, making it feel bigger and brighter, and the new window configuration provides multiple ventilation options.
