How did CR Smith transform light and space in this Dalgety Bay home?

Windows in a home play a key role in how light and space are experienced day to day. For Kerry and John in Dalgety Bay, their existing windows were holding the property back, both in terms of appearance and performance.

By upgrading to Lorimer windows and redesigning the configuration of the windows, the result is a home that feels lighter, more open and better connected to the outdoors.

Why did Kerry and John decide to upgrade their windows and doors?

The property was built in the early 2000s, and the original timber windows had become increasingly vulnerable to the elements over time.

Internally, the dark stained finish made rooms feel heavier and less inviting, while the overall performance of the windows no longer met modern expectations.

The patio doors at the back of the property also limited how the space could be used. With only one side opening, it restricted access and flow between the home and garden.

Looking to modernise their home while improving comfort and usability, Kerry and John turned to CR Smith.

How did changing the window finish transform the interior?

One of the most impactful changes in this project was the switch from a dark internal timber finish to a bright white interior.

Externally, the original rosewood finish was retained to preserve the character and appearance of the home. Internally, however, the lighted finish has completely transformed the feel of each room. The result is a space that now feels brighter, more modern, open and spacious.

This demonstrates how a simple change in finish can have a significant impact on the overall atmosphere of a home.

How were the window configurations improved?

At the front of the house, the bay window was redesigned to improve both ventilation and usability.

The original configuration features one large opening section, which limited flexibility. The new design introduces smaller top-hinged casement windows, allowing for better control of airflow while maintaining a clean, balanced appearance.

The change provides improved ventilation throughout the day, greater ease of use and a more refined symmetrical look.

How did the new French doors enhance the living space?

At the rear of the property, the original patio doors restricted access, with only one side opening.

These were replaced with Lorimer French doors, which allow both doors to open fully. This has created a much stronger connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, which is much better suited to everyday living in the summer months.

How do timber finishes and craftsmanship elevate the result?

Engineered timber sills were installed throughout the home and were painted white by professional CR Smith decorators.

This attention to detail ensures a consistent, high-quality finish across every room, enhancing both durability and appearance.

At CR Smith, all installations are carried out by employed joiners, ensuring a precise and carefully considered result that complements the overall design of the home.

What impact did the transformation have on the home?

The upgrade has significantly improved how the home looks, feels and functions.

Spaces that once felt darker and more enclosed are now bright, open and modern. Improved window configurations and new French doors have enhanced both ventilation and access, while updated finishes have created a more cohesive interior.

This project highlights how upgrading your windows and doors can improve energy efficiency, increase natural light and transform the overall feel of your home.

The living room bay window was restyled to include two top openers which provides multiple options for ventilation.

The bright white uPVC window frames help bring in the natural light and makes the area look much bigger.
