Mr & Mrs McKinnon had previously used CR Smith to build their conservatory, so the decision to use the firm again was a simple one. However, this time the couple, who live in an impressive 1930s built house in Glasgow, needed their windows replaced.
The original timber sash and case windows were rotten, draughty and opening some was almost impossible. What’s more, one window had a very distinctive stained glass pattern. Overall, the windows were an important feature of the house and the McKinnons did not want to lose any of their home’s character.
Working with the couple every step of the way, CR Smith advised them on the best and most cost effective approach. We took them through the process of replicating the stained glass window and our joiners were able to deal with all of the ‘wonky’ walls, typical of a 1930s house to perfection.
They are delighted with the finished installation and the guarantee that goes with it. “It was really important to us to recreate the original look of the windows and even if the stained glass was not the most inspiring design, it was ours!” said Mr McKinnon. “We wanted like for like and that is what we have and more.”
While the appearance of the windows may not have changed, the benefits of the new windows are vast. The couple told us that they have really noticed a difference. The house is now much warmer and they can’t hear people walking past in the street anymore. Thanks to CR Smith, the McKinnons are now the envy of all their neighbours.

Lorimer sliding sash windows
Traditional styling and clever design creates this modern-day masterpiece.
The Lorimer sliding sash double glazed window looks as beautiful and well proportioned as its timber sash and case predecessor, with many of the same features including deep bottom rail and traditional ironmongery.
It is the only window that will perfectly match the traditional architecture where timber sash and case would have been the original windows.
Beneath its elegant looks, function meets design with some ingenious engineering that allows both sashes to be tilted inwards for cleaning. But the real beauty of our sliding sash windows is that they don’t require a lifetime of painting and deliver an enhanced thermal performance versus those they replace.
