Why did the Jackson family decide it was time to replace their windows?
After completing improvements to their home interiors, Ruaridh Jackson and his wife recognised that their next major renovation project needed to focus on upgrading their windows.
The existing single-glazed sliding sash windows had become inefficient and uncomfortable, particularly during the colder months. Draughts were noticeable throughout the home, making it more difficult and costly to keep the house warm during the Scottish winter.
“Our windows were pretty old and very draughty. So, in a Scottish winter, it was pretty chilly and costing a fair bit to keep the place warm.”
Improving comfort and energy efficiency became the main motivation for replacing the windows while ensuring the character of the home remained intact.
Why were sliding sash windows the right choice?
The Jacksons originally had traditional timber sash and case windows and wanted to retain the classic appearance of their property. Maintaining the architectural character of the home was particularly important, as many neighbouring properties also feature sliding sash windows.
Lorimer sliding sash windows offered the perfect solution, combining modern double-glazed performance with the traditional proportions and style associated with heritage homes.
The Jacksons selected white internal sills and surrounds to keep the interior appearance fresh and consistent with the original aesthetic.
How has the upgrade improved comfort and energy efficiency?
Since the installation, the difference in warmth and comfort has been immediately noticeable. The new Lorimer double-glazed windows provide significantly improved insulation, helping to retain heat while eliminating the draughts that had previously affected the home.
“The draughts have completely gone”
This improvement has helped create a more comfortable living environment while also reducing the amount of energy required to heat the property.
What difference have the new Lorimer windows made day-to-day?
Beyond the improvements in warmth and efficiency, Ruaridh has been particularly impressed by the practical benefits of the new windows.
As a young family household, the easy-clean functionality of the Lorimer sliding sash design has made maintaining the windows far simpler than before.
“They’re beautiful windows.”
The new windows provide both aesthetic appeal and everyday practicality, enhancing how the home looks and functions.
What was the installation experience like?
From the initial consultation through to the final installation, the Jackson family found the entire process straightforward and professionally managed.
Ruaridh noted that the detailed explanation of the products and installation process during the early stages gave them confidence that they were making the right decision.
“Showcasing exactly what they were going to do, the process, the quality of the windows and what separated them from other window companies, and they delivered on everything”
Having undertaken various building projects before, Ruaridh described the installation experience as the most seamless experience he had encountered, with no setbacks, snagging or unexpected issues.
The result is a beautiful set of windows that enhance the home’s traditional character while delivering modern levels of comfort and performance.

“Aesthetically, from the outside, they look amazing. I think, as I say, going from single pane to the windows that we’ve got now, the drafts have completely gone, and as I say the functionality of them have been lovely as well. They’re beautiful windows.
Our windows were pretty old and very drafty so in a Scottish winter it was pretty chilly, costing a fair bit to keep the place warm. It was always on our plans to replace our windows at some point. And then thankfully got in touch with CR Smith.
So we went sliding sash windows to keep in with the area that we are in. All the old buildings have these styles of windows, so we wanted to make sure that we kept in those parameters and CR Smith delivered with exactly what we were after.
We did enquire with a few different companies because you always have to try and find what’s the best fit for you, but I think the thing that really separated CR Smith was the professionalism, the detail, and the care that they really put into the sales at the start of it.
Showcasing exactly what they were going to do, the process, the quality of the windows and what sort of separates them from other window companies and they delivered on everything.
There was no issues, no snagging, no complications with anything.
I think, just in terms of getting building work done, or any type of building work done, it was probably the most straightforward I’ve ever dealt with. It’s been a really great process from start to finish.”
