Your Guide to Year-Round Light
Living in Scotland means experiencing some of the world’s most spectacular natural scenery. But let’s be honest – sometimes our homes could use a bit more of that gorgeous natural light, especially during those cosy (but decidedly darker) winter months.
New windows can be transformational when it comes to creating a brighter home, but there is so much more you can do to restyle your space into a light-filled haven. Aimee Mitchell, is our design expert. Working with our beautiful windows every day, Aimee knows the importance of making the most of every view and every ray of sunshine, no matter the season.
Ready to be illuminated? Here is her practical guide to year-round natural light.
The Magic of Reflection
Want to know a designer’s secret weapon? Reflective surfaces are absolute game-changers. Position a mirror opposite your window, and watch how it instantly doubles the natural light in your room. Even something as simple as switching to satin-finish paint can make your space feel significantly brighter. It’s like having your own personal light multiplier!
Light Layering Magic
Here in Scotland, we know all about making the most of shorter days. The secret? Layer your lighting like a pro. Mix overhead lights with some strategically placed wall lights and table lamps. It’s like creating your own personal sunset – adjustable to match your mood!
Talking of sunsets. A customer came to us with a door design called ‘sunset over the sea’. Using our expertise in decorative glass, her beautiful new door now throws a rainbow of light into her hallway. Check out her story here.
Window Wisdom
Your windows are the stars of the show when it comes to natural light. If yours are looking a bit tired, consider upgrading to modern designs. But remember to look for windows with slim frames and perfect sight lines – they’re like giving your home a fresh perspective! The advanced engineering used to manufacture our Lorimer range creates a beautifully shaped slim frame that is as good to look at as it is strong and efficient. It is also unique to us, letting in masses of light and keeping your home cosy, too (perfect for those brisk Scottish winters).
Pro tip: Give your windows a regular clean – you’d be amazed at how much difference a sparkly clean window makes to your home’s brightness levels. Check out the helpful maintenance tips on the CR Smith FIX website.
Dress to Impress (Your Windows, That Is)
Heavy curtains might be traditional, but they can be real light-blockers. Consider swapping them for lighter fabrics that let the light dance through while keeping your privacy intact. Shutters, Venetian blinds and Night &Day blinds are brilliant too – they’re like having a light dimmer for the sun.
As an aside, Edinburgh Interior Designer Malcolm Duffin once told us, “Curtains do not make a room. How often have you walked into someone’s home and the first thing you do is look at the view from their window? First and foremost, never hide your outlook on to the world. If your new windows have brightened up your home and let the light flood in, don’t get distracted by over-elaborate swags, pelmets and frills.” I couldn’t agree more!
The Great Declutter
Sometimes, letting in more light is as simple as having a good clear-out. Bulky furniture and clutter can swallow up light faster than a Highland mist. Keep your space open and airy, and watch how the light flows naturally through your home.
As someone who works with windows and window designs, I’ve also come to appreciate the importance of clean sight lines. This is when the frames of your windows are aligned inside and out. No uninterrupted views on the one hand and no ugly or uneven looks on the other. Kevin Eadie, our Chief Executive, drives all the innovations at CR Smith;
“The proportions and position of sight lines through windows and the look of the frames are always considered,” he said. “CR Smith windows are not mass-manufactured. Each window is bespoke, made to the homeowners’ specific requirements and hand-finished.”
Bringing the Outside In
Take inspiration from Scotland’s stunning landscapes by embracing natural colours and materials. Think soft greys like coastal pebbles, gentle greens like Highland moss, and warm woods that remind you of forest walks. Add some hardy houseplants (yes, even if you don’t have green fingers – there are plenty that thrive in Scottish homes), and you’ll create a bright, fresh space that feels connected to nature.
If you are prepared to take a more dramatic step, have you considered transforming a window into patio or French doors? You will be amazed at the difference it can make to the way you enjoy your home.
Transform Your Space
Remember, every home is unique, and what works in one space might not work in another. The key is finding what works for your home’s character while maximising every precious ray of light. Whether you’re considering a window upgrade, playing with mirror placement, or simply rearranging your furniture, you can make a big difference in creating a brighter, more uplifting living space.
