Why did Mr Docherty decide it was time to replace his windows and doors?
Mr Docherty’s existing uPVC windows had been in place for over 26 years and were originally installed by a friend as a favour. The design consisted of a lower fixed pane with top-hinged casement hopper windows above, a configuration that had become impractical over time.
The handles were positioned too high to reach comfortably and required the use of a stool to access. Once opened, the hoppers were difficult to close, making everyday ventilation frustrating rather than functional.
In addition to the windows, the old-fashioned aluminium front door was dated and lacked functionality. The door limited security and reduced the property’s kerb appeal.
How did Lorimer reversible windows improve everyday usability?
To address accessibility and ease of use, Lorimer reversible windows were recommended. To comply with Scottish building regulations, the reversible windows were styled over a fixed pane, which allowed for the handles to be positioned at a practical height. This makes opening and closing the windows a simple and safe task. Additionally, the ingenious design of reversible windows allows for easy cleaning. Mr Docherty can now remain inside when cleaning the outer pane, improving everyday usability.
How has the upgrade improved comfort and energy efficiency?
The older windows were no longer performing efficiently, with draughts and heat loss affecting comfort throughout the home. The new Lorimer windows offer enhanced thermal performance, helping retain heat and reduce cold spots.
In Mr Docherty’s son’s bedroom in particular, the difference has been transformative. The previous double glazed unit had failed, causing condensation inside the pane, obscuring views and contributing to a cold environment. Now, with perfectly clear glazing and improved insulation, the room is warmer and more comfortable, with uninterrupted views.
How has the new front door improved security and kerb appeal?
The dated aluminium front door had been retrofitted to the original timber door frame and had limited security and also detracted from the home’s beautiful sandstone exterior.
Mr Docherty upgraded to an Etna TimberLuxe engineered timber door with the classic collection, finished in anthracite grey with chrome hardware. The premium door delivered high thermal efficiency and advanced locking systems, helping keep the home warm, safe and secure.
The contemporary design and finish have also significantly improved kerb appeal, giving the property a fresh, elegant first impression.
What impact has the transformation had overall?
The combination of improved usability, enhanced thermal performance and upgraded security has transformed how the home now looks and feels. Mr Docherty commented on how he feels like his home has been rejuvenated, saying:
“I am delighted with the finished product. My home feels brand new.”
This Glasgow project demonstrated how thoughtful window and door designs, tailored to real everyday needs, can dramatically improve comfort, appearance and day-to-day living.
The new windows and doors offer easier operation and functionality, along with improved energy efficiency and kerb appeal. They deliver solutions that make homes more comfortable, secure and enjoyable all year round.
