Why did Ms MacLeod decide it was time to replace her windows and doors?
Ms MacLead’s old timber windows were dated and inefficient. Several double-glazed units were misted, and draughts were impacting the comfort within her home. Over time, the original timber tilt and turn windows had begun to detract from both the appearance and usability of the space.
Upgrading the windows and doors presented an opportunity to resolve these issues, and also to refresh the overall look of the home. Increasing its kerb appeal and improving everyday usability and comfort.
How did Lorimer windows transform the look of the home?
A key part of this upgrade was to enhance the home aesthetically while respecting its proportions. Ms MacLeod replaced the original timber tilt and turn windows, which featured a transom across the middle, with white uPVC Lorimer top-hinged casement windows.
On each window where the transom had been retained, an additional sash has been added to the frame to create equal sight lines, bringing balance and symmetry to the elevation. Retaining the transom ensured continuity with the original design, and all casement windows at CR Smith feature mechanically jointed transoms which closely replicate traditional timber windows. This small detail goes a long way in preserving the heritage look, but with the added benefits of modern-day technology.
Unlike a standard bird beak weld, a mechanically jointed transom also brings further strength to the overall window structure, while delivering a more authentic, refined finish.
How did the upgrade improve comfort and energy efficiency?
Functionally, the transformation has been just as significant. The new Lorimer windows have helped increase the thermal efficiency of the home by reducing draughts and keeping the home warmer and more comfortable all year round.
Advanced uPVC frames and double glazing work together to reduce heat loss, creating a warmer and more comfortable living environment. Due to the multi-chamber uPVC frames, the cold air is trapped, creating an additional insulating barrier between the inside and out, a clever advancement within window design that results in a warmer, more energy-efficient home.
How did the new back door transform light within the dining room?
At the back of the property, Ms MacLeod replaced her previous single-glazed French doors with a single Lorimer uPVC door with a full double-glazed panel and fanlight above. This change has dramatically increased the amount of natural light entering the room, transforming the space into one that feels bright, open and airy. The simplified design improves both usability and visual flow, while maintaining strong thermal performance and security.
How has the bedroom upgrade changed the feel of the space?
In the master bedroom, timber rosewood tilt and turn windows with matching rosewood sills and surrounds were replaced with white uPVC Lorimer top-hinged casement windows. The functionality of the top-hinged casement windows means Ms MacLeod can open them with ease and increase air flow within the room. Top-hinged casement windows are practical for bedrooms as they open out from the bottom, preventing any restrictions with blinds and curtains.
By upgrading the original rosewood sill and surrounds to an engineered white full finish, the room instantly feels larger and brighter. The lighter palette reflects more natural light, helping create a calm, welcoming space that feels both modern and comfortable.
What impact has the transformation had overall?
The upgrade has elevated the appearance of Ms MacLeod’s home both internally and externally. Each room now feels brighter, more spacious and more cohesive, while the improved thermal performance has made the home warmer and more energy-efficient. This project is a clear example of how thoughtful design choices, combined with high-performance windows and door systems, can deliver both style and substance.
“I’m delighted with the huge difference the new windows and back door have made to my home. Each room looks and feels so much brighter and cosier.”
