Why did Mr McCulloch decide it was time to replace his windows?
Mr McCulloch’s home was built in the 1930s and had seen several window replacements over the decades. The existing windows were single glazed, timber-frames and becoming increasingly inefficient.
As well as being cold and requiring regular painting, the timber transoms sat at eye level, which interrupted what should have been a stand out feature of the home; its elevated view across the River Tay.
“The original windows were timber construction with a timber transom and they were at eye level. It wasn’t good with the fantastic view you have of the River Tay.”
Replacing the windows presented a good opportunity to improve comfort, reduce maintenance and finally make the most of the home’s unique outlook.
How did the new design improve the view?
A key improvement came from repositioning the transom in the new Lorimer uPVC windows. By carefully adjusting its height, CR Smith was able to retain the traditional window proportions while dramatically improving sight lines.
‘New the level that the transom is at with the CR Smith windows, you’ve got this lovely view now.”
The result is a clearer, more open connection to the River Tay, allowing natural light and scenery to become a central feature of the living space.
How has the upgrade improved comfort and energy efficiency?
The original single-glazed timber windows created significant heat loss, making the home colder and less energy efficient. Now, the Lorimer uPVC casement windows provide far better insulation, helping to retain warmth and while also reducing draughts.
“The benefit has been fantastic between the view and the heat benefits, both equally important to me.”
Improved thermal performance has contributed to lower energy usage, offering long-term efficiency alongside everyday comfort.
Why was low maintenance an important factor?
As a tradesperson himself, Mr McCulloch was well aware of the upkeep required to keep timber windows looking their best. The move to uPVC has removed the need for ongoing painting and maintenance.
“The single glazed windows were obviously cold and timber… whereas the new uPVC are low maintenance.”
This practical benefit ensures the windows will continue to look good with minimal effort.
What was the installation experience like?
With a background in joinery, Mr McCulloch has a keen eye for workmanship and fitting quality. While naturally tempted to get involved, he quickly recognised the expertise of the installation team.
“Being a joiner myself… the guys knew what they were doing and at the end of the day they turned out an excellent job.”
Mr McCulloch also passed comment on how the professionalism was consistent throughout the process, from the initial consultation through to the installation and aftercare. He said:
“From the rep coming out, to the surveyor, to the office and the tradespeople, it was all plain sailing.”
How do the new Lorimer windows complement the character of the home?
The Lorimer windows were carefully chosen to respect the original 1930s design of the property. Both internally and externally, they sit comfortably within the architecture, enhancing rather than overpowering the home’s character. The classic white finish and with an essence of the original design, adjusted to accommodate the views, has preserved the heritage charm while benefiting from modern technology.
“They do a lot of credit to the 1930s design of the building, it looks in part.”
Mr McCulloch mentioned how his friends and family have since commented on the windows and how well they suit the house, reinforcing the success of the upgrade.
How do Lorimer windows enhance character homes with standout views?
This Dundee project shows how the right design of Lorimer windows can enhance both performance and perspective. Working closely with CR Smith product experts, the right design can be created to accentuate heritage designs while improving thermal efficiency, reducing maintenance and thoughtfully refining sight lines.
New Lorimer windows allow homeowners to enjoy the best features of their property, whether that’s architectural character or breathtaking views, all without compromise.
