How did CR Smith help the Burrows family modernise their 1930s home while improving comfort and efficiency?

At CR Smith, every home improvement project should deliver more than just a practical upgrade. It should enhance the way a home looks and feels, while meeting all the customer’s requirements and expectations.

When working with Mr and Mrs Burrows, our expert team delivered on all aspects, from their initial design appointment right through to post-installation care.

Why did the Burrows family decide to replace their windows?

When Mr and Mrs Burrows decided it was time to upgrade their windows, they wanted more than just improved energy efficiency; they were looking for a cleaner, more contemporary appearance that would brighten their living spaces.

Having been CR Smith customers in the 1980s, they knew first-hand the quality and longevity of our products, so they returned to us to help with their upgrade.

How did CR Smith design windows that suited the home’s style?

Looking to retain the original bay window layout, the Burrows opted for a top-hinged casement window in the middle and two fixed panes on either side, all finished with decorative hoppers.

The central, top-hinged casement allows for easy access to the handle and excellent airflow when open, while fully complying with Scottish Building Regulations.

The original windows featured lead detailing, a popular trend at the time, but the Burrows wanted to modernise their home’s look. They chose square lead only on the hoppers to give a subtle nod to tradition, while removing it from the main panes for a cleaner finish. This choice has allowed more natural light to flood in and opened up their beautiful views.

What finish did they choose for the perfect balance of style and character?

After careful discussion with their local product expert, they decided on anthracite grey frames externally. This rich colour provides a striking contrast against their light grey harling, giving the property a sleek, contemporary edge while still complementing its 1930s character.

Internally, the crisp white frames, sills and surrounds keep rooms feeling bright and airy, while the high-performance Lorimer glazing ensures the home stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

What transformation did the new Lorimer casement windows deliver?

The result is a home that looks refreshed and modern from the outside, feels lighter and more open on the inside, and benefits from improved comfort, security and energy efficiency.

Why did the Burrows choose CR Smith again?

For the Burrows, it wasn’t just about upgrading their home – it was about returning to a company they trusted. Having experienced the quality and service from CR Smith decades earlier, they felt confident that their new project would deliver the same outstanding results.
