The Bancewicz family of Tony (39), Fay (38) and daughters Madeleine (3) and Jessica (2) had 14 solar PV panels installed by CR Smith on their detached, four-bedroom new build house in November this year. They were persuaded by prospect of saving on electricity bills and as they don’t plan to stay in the house forever they thought it would be a good investment in their home.

Despite having the panels fitted at seemingly one of the worst times of the year, generating their own electricity is changing the way they do things.

Fay says: “The washing machine never seems to be off with two little ones so now rather than putting a load of washing on at night, I put the timer on and do it through the day to make the most of the electricity we’re generating. Same with the dishwasher. We try to do things during the day when our hand-held terminal shows that we’re generating electricity and knowing that it’s completely free.”

It’s too early to judge the impact of the additional income, but the impact on the street is impressive. Tony, who owns Stirling Optical in Port Street Stirling, says that theirs is the first house on the estate to get solar panels installed and cars are always slowing down to take a look. “The panels look great on our roof – I haven’t seen such a neat job anywhere,” he says.
