Conservatories – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why buy a Conservatory?

At CR Smith we're passionate about the benefits of owning a conservatory. There are the obvious reasons such as extra space at an affordable price; the ability to enjoy the garden even when the weather is bad; the potential increase to the value of your property and even the health giving properties of being exposed to extra sunlight. But we think they offer more than that...

A conservatory, orangerie or sunroom is the chance to create the home you really want by offering a solution to a number of lifestyle issues. Whether it's creating  a dining area away from the kitchen to entertain friends in style, a quiet space to read or sit back and relax, or a sitting room specifically for the adults when the kids have taken over every other room in the house - a conservatory can be the answer.

This is because a Lorimer Conservatory can be as individual and bespoke as you like. At CR Smith we’ve created everything from Moroccan-style snugs, to fitness rooms and even to chic entertainment pads!

So we say don't just think of a conservatory as extra space - it can be so much more than that. Have fun, dream a little (or even a lot), let a new Lorimer Conservatory, Orangerie or Sunroom be the starting point for solving a problem or even better creating your dream home!

2. But is a conservatory suitable for my home?

CR Smith have fitted more conservatories than anyone else in Scotland so whether you have an old house or a new one, a small budget or a large one, loads of room or a tiny garden, we're confident we can create something for your home.

You can take a look at previous installations on our website to see just how many different kinds of properties we have installed in.

3. Which is the best conservatory for my needs?

It’s important to think about what you intend to use your conservatory for, as well as how you want it to look. We offer a wide range of styles, so there is something to suit everyone and there is very little we can’t do. Once you have a rough idea of the style you would like for your conservatory, we can advise you further.

Here's a quick run down of the main styles we offer:

Edwardian - adds a touch of period elegance to your home, good for maximising internal floor space and very adaptable.

Gable Front - bright, airy and sophisticated, usually square or rectangle in shape.

Gullwing - a new twist on an old style, incorporates a large floor area and a period style roof for elegance and space.

Victorian - a beautifully rounded, traditional look.

Sunlounge - an understated look with a single sloping roof, add bi-fold doors to really open up your house on to the garden.

If you would prefer to create an extension that feels a bit more like another room of the house don't forget about our range of orangeries and tiled sunrooms.

Orangerie -  our Lorimer Orangerie is becoming ever more popular, contains more brickwork than a conservatory and a glazed roof with a partially solid surrounding, lending it a more contained and contemporary feel.

Tiled Sunroom - creates a more traditional room, designed with or without interconnecting doors, it is best used to extend an existing living space.

And with our FREE 3D Design Service we use state of the art software to create visuals of how your conservatory, orangery or sunroom will eventually look, so there will be no surprises. And you can experiment until your hearts content!

4. How long does a Conservatory take to install and what does it involve?

Installation periods vary depending upon the size and style of the conservatory you are opting for, but we aim to make the process as quick and painless as possible.

Once we have visited your home, made a valuation and given you a free quote, we will be able to give you a more definite idea of how long the installation period will take.

Our conservatories will ALWAYS be built on a solid base.

Where possible CR Smith will source brick, stone or render to match your home. Our base walls are traditionally built with two skins of brick and a cavity. They will include a damp proof course, damp proof membrane and drainage.

5. Will I need planning permission?

Planning permission varies on a case-by-case basis. But if you want a standard conservatory in your back garden, you shouldn’t need the go-ahead from your local council. The waters become muddier, however, if you live in a listed building, want an extension facing your street or a conservatory that’s larger than standard regulations.

Our Architectural Technicians handle every stage of the planning process and most importantly any paperwork involved, which  is is all part of the service we offer as standard.

6. What's special about a CR Smith Lorimer Conservatory?

Our entire Lorimer range is designed and built using market leading technology with unique slim lines and a contoured appearance that make Lorimer products so much more attractive than competitors. Most importantly you'll have a bespoke design so your conservatory really is your own.

All are fitted as standard with the latest SmartGlass™ self-cleaning roof and a Climate Control unit that regulates the temperature of your conservatory at just the touch of a button. All windows come with reinforced frames and multi-lock points giving you enhanced security and peace of mind. When completed, your new conservatory will be ready to use and fully finished with flooring, decorating and electricity.

All of our products are manufactured at our very own factory in Scotland; exceed Scottish Building regulations; are fitted with 'A' energy rated windows and are designed to specifically to withstand the Scottish weather. All conservatories also come with a 10 year guarantee.

It is our intention to make your experience of purchasing from us a pleasurable and easy one. To that end we give every customer a dedicated product manger and aim to give you value, quality and a high standard of service.

7.  How much will it roughly cost?

Our Sales Executives can also talk you through our Homemaker Finance packages, which often feature market-leading interest rates and an initial 12 months interest free credit.
